Day Zero

I sit here in the fading Oakland sun writing what will be my final post for two weeks. I am due at the port security gate at 8:00 p.m. tonight to board the Hanjin Pretoria. I will spend the night on the berthed ship and we will be setting out around sunrise tomorrow to begin the trans-Pacific journey which will end at Port Klang, Malaysia.

The weight of reality is setting in and the trip seems less abstract now. The next two weeks will be spent without any sort of connection to the outside world and I plan do read, write, and use my iPod to put a soundtrack to our ocean crossing. I'm hoping to learn a little about the sea-faring life along the way.

I am certain that I will have a plenitude of material to share when I disembark in Malaysia, but until then, remember that the most important things in life are family, friends, and breakfast. I would say bon voyage, but that seems a little bit self serving.

To all my friends and family, live well while I'm gone and be sure to feed my fish twice a day.
